29. MARCH – 11. NovEMBER 2019
Joseph Haydn
Pupil – Teacher – Pioneer
This year’s special exhibition in 2019 is devoted to the persons who were the first to encounter Haydn’s music and his unique style of composition: his pupils and musicians. Even later generations, from Haydn’s time until now, were driven by the love for his music and made it their task to spread his music through the world.
Haydn create
After introducing Haydn’s own experience of being a pupil, special attention will be paid on his work as a teacher which even induced him to write his own teaching book. Based on what young composers learned from Haydn and how they distributed his music next to his publishers, the exhibition presents 4 of the 25 genuine pupils of Haydn. Each one of them is representing a specific type.
Haydn’s influence on his pupils during his time as music director at the Esterházy court is addressed in the same ways as the musicians of the Esterházy court chapel and the scientific research of Haydn in classical music.
Dedications, portraits, writing instruments, a metronome, historical music stands and textbooks from Haydn’s school years are all displayed in the exhibition.
Curator: Dr. Martin Czernin
