Permanent Exhibition:
Haydn@Home

Nowhere else is the private life and creative work of Joseph Haydn portrayed so comprehensively.

Baroque living feeling

The room with the representative green mural painting may have been Haydn's living room, where the Haydn couple received their guests. It is known from Haydn's will that he also had a large collection of copperplate engravings - framing the rooms as framed pictures - and a rich library. The furniture of this room dates from the time of Joseph Haydn. The bust of Viennese biscuit porcelain by the Imperial Manufactory of Antonio Grassi is an authentic reflection of the composer.

An unhappy marriage

Haydn was married to Maria Anna Theresia Keller, daughter of an imperial wig maker. A small portrait medallion shows the wife of the composer - the only known image next to a medallion of her husband, as well as the marriage contract. The marriage remained childless. Haydn are said to have numerous affairs, ia. He had a love affair with the Italian singer in the Esterházy opera ensemble Luigia Polzelli, whom he had promised to marry, and supported her and her sons throughout his life. Antonio Polzelli is considered the common son of this connection.

The kitchen of the Haydn House is reconstructed in the style of the time. In addition to his pecuniary wages of 782 fl (gulden), Haydn also received a considerable amount of royalty items such as firewood, wine, lard, half a fattening pig, oats, cereals and candles or salt.

Uniform & wig

The „Camer“ so called in his inventory, was probably Haydn's bedroom, where he slept on a cot. There was no common marital bedroom in the house, as it was not common at the time. The red-striped wall painting is still largely preserved and was uncovered in 2009. Haydn's trademark was, according to the time, the wig he wore with pride, as well as his uniform of an Esterházy's house officer. A photograph of the lost portrait of Basilius Grundmann shows the Hofkapellmeister in a blue uniform decorated with silver embroidery. His service attire as court bandmaster was a red uniform trimmed with gold trim.

Restored original wall painting

The adjoining room, with the recently uncovered mural, Haydn had in the course of reconstruction after the first fire of the house 1768 build. It was probably his work and music room. Today, the musical genres Piano Sonata and Piano Trio are thematized in this room, compositions for higher daughters and aristocratic ladies, mostly dilettantes in this musical field. The centerpiece of this room is the Anton Walter Wing, which originates from the environment of the castle Eszterháza, Haydn's long-standing place of work. Piano sonatas and trios with dedications to Esterházy's princesses, publisher's wives and daughters and to his soulmate and faithful friend Marianne von Genzinger lie in the showcases.

Two authentic portraits of the composer are also in this room. The portrait of Christian Ludwig Seehas, recently acquired by the Joseph Haydn Private Foundation, shows Joseph Haydn as an attractive 53-year-old man who is well aware of his position as a renowned court Kapellmeister. The portrait was made in 1785 during a stay of the Schwerin court painter in Vienna. Joseph Haydn is shown half-length with a fur-trimmed skirt of brown fabric, under which a red, gold-embroidered waistcoat of his musician's uniform with lace-trimmed neckline (plastron) appears. This portrait of Haydn of Seehas is next to that of Ludwig Guttenbrunn, the second oil painting in this room, the most authentic and representative image of Haydn.

String quartet & oratorios

„of a new, very special kind, because for 10 years I have not written any“ so Haydn calls his string quartet op. 33, to potential customers, u.a. Prince Öttigen-Wallerstein or the Swiss scholar Caspar Lavater and other interested parties. Haydn is considered the inventor of the string quartet. This musical genre was then studied and further developed with great zeal by its contemporaries like Mozart or his pupils like Beethoven or Pleyel. Haydn composed a total of 68 string quartets, many of which carry dedications to aristocratic rulers.

In the last room of the permanent exhibition, everything revolves around the two great German oratorios by Joseph Haydn. In the years 1791-1795 Haydn received in London the highest reputation and recognition and was within a very short time the center of the musical events. Here he also got to know the oratorios of Georg Friedrich Händel in a large cast, which he had not heard before.

„The Creation“ is Haydn's first German-language oratorio. In the city palace of Prince Schwarzenberg, after a two-year creative period - 1798, the premiere of Haydn's first oratorio took place under his personal direction in the private circle of patrons and patrons. The creation became an overwhelming success and is one of his most important and well-known compositions. Encouraged by the great appeal of his oratorio "The Creation" Joseph Haydn began after a libretto by Gottfried van Swieten with another great oratorio: the seasons. Was it because of the libretto or the more profane content - Joseph Haydn could not join in this work to the success that brought the creation. Although the premiere in 1801 was acclaimed, a sustained euphoria, as it had caused the creation, did not follow.
