Haydn on tour
From Vienna to London in 18 days

This year’s special exhibition displays Joseph Haydn’s arduous journeys to London by stage coach and ship.

„I am Salomon from London and come to pick you up, tomorrow we will close a chord.“ ... Haydn did not have to be persuaded for long. His employment contract was terminated by his employer Anton Prince Esterházy. He finally had the long-awaited freedom to finally embark on this great journey. On December 15, 1790, Haydn, accompanied by Johann Peter Salomon, set off from Vienna on a stagecoach to London. On New Year's Day 1791 they translated by boat from Calais to Dover and reached on 2 January 1791 London.

In 1794 Haydn traveled to England a second time. This time he traveled more comfortable and probably faster. Baron van Swieten provided him with a light touring car, a so-called Berline, from his private fleet. These types of carriages were more comfortable because they were better sprung and manoeuvrable. Haydn also did not spend the night in the post offices, but in private accommodation or inns.

The exhibition is dedicated to the arduous journey by coach and ship in general and explains the main stages of these trips in particular. From Haydn's letters to Marianne von Genzinger or reports to his biographers, one knows where he spent the night, what he ate and whom he met on the journey. Important stations were the imperial coronation in Frankfurt or the meeting with Beethoven in Bonn, which are discussed as well as anecdotes or the crossing on a stormy sea from Calais to Dover and their musical expression in the creation.

Travel anecdotes

At the individual travel stations the visitor experiences history and stories. Amusing anecdotes peppered with witty quotations from Haydn are told. So Haydn was asked at the border crossing in Schärding for his job. He answered: „Sound master“, then the publican: „So potter.“ Haydn's answer: „Yes, and the one in the car here is my companion.“ Haydn's traveling companion was Johann Elssler, his secretary.

Another entertaining episode took place in Wiesbaden, where he stopped off in January 1794. In the inn, where Haydn had been staying, somebody in the next room was playing the popular Andante with a bang on a pianoforte. He held the player for his friend and entered the room where he heard the music. He found some Prussian officers who were all great admirers of his music. He made himself known, but the musicians did not believe him to be Haydn. "Impossible! Impossible! You Haydn? - An already so aged man! - How does that rhyme with the fire in your music? No! We shall never believe it! "In this tone, the gentlemen continued to express their doubts until Haydn showed the letter received from their king, which he fortunately carried in his suitcase. Now the officers overwhelmed him with praise and admiration, and he had to stay in their company until after midnight.

Through an oversized map, the visitor enters the special exhibition and receives in the first special exhibition room his „travel documents“, with which he embarks on an exciting and adventurous journey from Vienna through European cities to London. An audio guide gives you additional, detailed travel descriptions and suitable music examples. Sheet music, autograph letters and journal notes as well as symbolic objects in the thematic locations explain the individual stations.
